You would think that with the rise of people working in an office environment, sitting at a desk, that office chairs would have evolved to be amazing, especially for us back pain sufferers. Unfortunately, modern office furniture still leaves much to be desired. This review of the AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair explains why this chair is no different.
Because of the lack of adaptability and solid shapes, office chairs are causing us to adopt poor posture when we sit at them. Moreover, because we sit at them for many hours a day every day, that poor posture becomes second nature to us, which then goes on to cause us all sorts of back, neck, and leg pains.
As a result, many of us are trying to replace our standard office chairs with something a little more friendly towards our backs. One example of the many items touted as ergonomic is the AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair. However, despite its claims, closer inspection has revealed that if you are looking for an upgrade for your desk chair to help back pain, you may want to find something better.

What’s So Great About The AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair?
CHEAP AND STURDY: This chair is an inexpensive option for the office or home seating, but it is still robust and reliable. It offers solid back support and allows you to lean back and relax when you need to take the pressure off your back for a moment.
BREATHABLE AND COOL: Because of its mesh back and the materials they manufacture it with, the AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair is breathable and helps the back keep cool, making it perfect for warm or humid work environments. It is also simple to wipe clean, preventing the buildup of debris and stains which can happen with fabric coated office chairs.
STANDARD OFFICE CHAIR FUNCTIONS: The height can be adjusted, as can the amount of lean in the back. The chair comes with wheels that you can choose to use or not to add. It offers acceptable lower and mid back support for people of average height and weight, but it does not go much above and beyond what you expect from an office chair.
What’s Not So Great About The AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair?
225 POUND WEIGHT LIMIT: The 250-pound weight limit on most ergonomic chairs is already not enough, but this chair can only support up to 225 pounds. Also, due to its shape, it does not suit people with wider hips. If you are someone with a heavier build, like me, then you should avoid this chair, as there is no guarantee that it supports you.
NOT VERY ADAPTABLE: There are very few chairs that are wholly adaptable to your body while being inexpensive. However, the AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair does not offer any options besides raising or lowering the height of the chair and relaxing or tensing the amount of flexibility in the back of the seat.
SHORT WORK LIFE: Even though it is very robust, it does suffer wear and tear quite quickly. The seat padding begins to flatten quite fast, and the arms and mesh back begin to wear down and come away a little after only a year of use. If you want something to last you a few years, then invest a little bit more in a better quality chair.
Is The AmazonBasics Mid-Back Mesh Chair A Great Purchase?
You get what you pay for, as the saying goes. This chair is not the most ergonomic or comfortable and is not much of an improvement over standard office furniture. Unless you are upgrading from a hard-backed wooden chair and do not have the money to spare, you may want to get a higher quality chair with more support.
If you are in the market for a mid-back chair, I wrote about a better one that you can check out here. It is also sold on Amazon, but is much more adjustable, and supports the lower back. It is not great for upper back and neck pain, however since it is a mid-back chair. Be sure to check it out and leave a comment to tell me what you think.
